This international anthology takes us to the seldom discussed and anthologized beginnings of the prose poem. It gathers the foundational writings of William Blake, Charles Baudelaire and Max Jacob alongside lesser-known practitioners such as Judith Gautier, Elena Guro, Renée Vivien, Mizuno Yōshū, Dino Campana, Liu Bannong and Marcel Lecomte. The writers presented here celebrate the diversity of a genre that, perhaps more than any other poetic form, has cultivated hybridity and in-betweenness at many levels, be they aesthetic, cultural or political. This volume should be indispensable to anyone interested in modern and contemporary poetics as well as, more generally, the permutations of literary tradition and innovation.

Edited and with an introduction by Mary Ann Caws and Michel Delville. With over 20 translators from around the world.

Andre Breton described Maldoror as "the expression of a revelation so complete it seems to exceed human potential." Little is known about its pseudonymous author, aside from his real name (Isidore Ducasse), birth in Uruguay (1846) and early death in Paris (1870). Lautreamont bewildered his contemporaries, but the Surrealists modeled their efforts after his black humor and poetic leaps of logic, exemplified by the oft-quoted line, "As beautiful as the chance meeting on a dissecting table of a sewing machine and an umbrella." Maldoror's shocked first publisher refused to bind the sheets of the original edition--and perhaps no better invitation exists to this book, which warns the reader, "Only the few may relish this bitter fruit without danger."

This is the only complete annotated collection of Lautreamont's writings available in English, in Alexis Lykiard's superior translation. For this latest edition, Lykiard updates his introduction to include recent scholarship.

As the title suggests, this new volume edited by Koji Wakui and published in Japan in 2022, is entirely dedicated to the phenomenon of Canterbury Rock, something very close to the heart of World Food Books. Beginning with the "Canterbury Story", the book is broken into chapters around prominent pivotal artists, namely; Soft Machine; Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt; Caravan; Daevid Allen, Gong; Slapp Happy, Henry Cow; weaving together the tight-knit, over-lapping legacies of The Canterbury scene (or Canterbury sound), a musical scene centred around the city of Canterbury, Kent, England during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The term describes a loosely-defined, improvisational, avant-garde style that blended elements of jazz, rock, and psychedelia, and has come to be associated with progressive rock, art rock and British jazz-fusion. These musicians played together in numerous bands, with ever-changing and overlapping personnel. Illustrated throughout with a comprehensive discography of the artists involved, the extensive Japanese texts by Isao Inubushi, Noboru Umemura, Tetsuto Koyama, Yoshio Tachikawa, Midori Mashita, Takumi Matsui, Jiro Morijiro Junichi Yamada, Akira Yamanaka, Koji Wakui are accompanied by band photos and album art. Includes: The Wilde Flowers, Caravan, Gong, Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth, Soft Machine, Henry Cow, Slapp Happy, Hatfield and The North, National Health, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper, Mike Ratledge, Pip Pyle, Lol Coxhill, Mike Westbrook, Centipede, Anthony Moore, Dagmar Krause, Peter Blegvad, Fred Frith, Art Bears, Skeleton Crew, Massacre, The Work, Chris Cutler, Charles Hayward, John Greaves, Lisa Herman, Kevin Coyne, Lindsay Cooper, Here and Now, Alan Gowen, Elton Dean, Karl Jenkins, Arzachel, Egg, Dave Stewart, Steve Hillage, Camel, Bill Bruford, Gilgamesh, Richard Sinclair, Camel, Mother Gong, Banana Moon band.... and more!

First, very rare edition of The Hearts of Space Guide to Cosmic, Transcendent and Innerspace Music: An Annotated Listing of the Music Heard Since 1973 on the Weekly Radio Program Music from the Hearts of Space, self-published by The Hearts of Space, San Fransisco. First produced in 1973 by presenter Stephen Hill with co-producer Anna Turner, Hearts of Space is a pioneering weekly syndicated public radio show in California featuring music of a contemplative nature drawn largely from the ambient, New Age and electronic genres, while also including classical, world, Celtic, experimental, and other music selections. For many years, Hill has applied the term "space music" to the music broadcast on the show, irrespective of genre. It is the longest-running radio program of its type in the world. It was first broadcast as Music from the Hearts of Space, a three-hour long late-night show on KPFA-FM in Berkeley, California. Each episode ends with Hill gently saying, "Safe journeys, space fans ... wherever you are."

This annotated listening guide traverses the spectrum of space music presented on the radio throughout the 1970s-80s, with the editors providing introductions, glossary of genres, descriptions of each record, alongside interspersed reflections on sound by scholars, composers, artists, poets, architects — everyone from Cage to Inayat Khan, Steiner to Wagner. Includes a list of related material including reading, retail and mail-order sources, as well as a full index and record label contacts. An indispensable volume for anyone interested in ambient music, beautifully designed by Janaia Marisolle.

NEW AGE: STONEHENGE TO JUNGLE B2B 1973/2000

2022, English
Softcover, 376 pages, 31 x 22 cm
Published by Dashwood Books / New York Cultural Traffic / UK

$160.00 - In stock -

New Age: Stonehenge to Jungle is a comprehensive collection of iconic UK rave, jungle, sound system and warehouse party flyers dating from the early 1973s to 2000.

The book is sourced and curated from the Mott Collection – an extensive archive that gathers paper ephemera of British popular culture from punk to rave – curated by artist and collector Toby Mott.

Crammed full of 575 entries of flyers and other collectables, New Age is a visual feast that charts the origins and progress of a series of youth rebellions that were to last for a generation. The book looks beyond the music into the fantastical visual language that propelled this subculture, offering a global perspective on how British party culture shifted through the decades.

New Age opens with an extensive array of iconic flyers created for the early 1970s free festivals of Stonehenge and Windsor. It then moves into the 1980s, when the boom of illegal London warehouse parties gave birth to acid house – visually embodied by its iconic smiley face, then evolved into sound system and dub clashes. As rave culture takes over, the designs of the flyers become more complex, unveiling a craving for dystopian experiences and surrealistic universes forged by the vision of masters of flyer art, the likes of Pez and Junior Tomlin – also known as the Salvador Dalí of Rave.

The book traces the rise of jungle music and more widely the aesthetic of the 1990s, digging into its Jamaican roots and bringing together reggae, rave and sound system culture, giving insight into the profound, and yet often overlooked, impact of the Black British community on rave music.

Featuring interviews with influential flyer designers such as Pez, Kaos, Junior Tomlin, and Dave Little.

First edition of the quickly out-of-print, now rarely seen Krautrock : Cosmic Rock and Its Legacy. One of the greatest books on the subject.

The late 1960s in West Germany was a period of profound breakthroughs, upheavals and reversals. Communes were spreading, protests organised throughout the entire country, the desire to begin everything anew permeating the young. Out of this climate, a music scene exploded that would forever change the face of western rock; at times anarchic, at others mystical, magickal, or utopian, it pushed rock beyond any known limits. Never a genre or a movement per se, Krautrock encompassed a very wild and diverse range of sounds, attitudes, and past musics, from free jazz to Karlheinz Stockhausen, from dada to Fluxus, from German Romanticism to the Mothers of Invention. The musicians operated outside any known categories, breaking new ground and turning their backs to both their country's past and the conventions of Anglo-American rock. Their vision fired the imaginations of generations of musicians after them: Cabaret Voltaire, Brian Eno, Nurse with Wound, PiL, DAF, Einsturzende Neubauten, to only name a few, have all acknowledged their deb to Krautrock's uncompromising ethics and innovative sounds. Profiling diverse key musical groups of the period, including Amon Düül (I & II), Can, Faust, Ash Ra Temple, Gila, Limbus, Walter Wegmüller, Cluster, Popol Vuh, Xhol, Between/Hamel, Guru Guru, Anima, Et Cetera/Wolfgang Dauner, Agitation Free, Harmonia, Embryo, Tangerine Dream, and many more, alongside the key producers (Plank, Dirks, Augustin, Kaiser) and records labels (Brain, Pilz, OHR, Kuckuck, etc.), and also a timeline of the period, this book quickly became a valuable resource. Profusely illustrated with with concert, studio and press photos, posters, record cover art and other rare visual material. Texts by Archie Patterson, Michel Faber, Erik Davis, David Stubbs, David Keenan, Ken Hollings, Brian Morton, Steve Krakow, Mark Pilkington, Gavin Russom, Stephen Thrower, and Ann Shenton make this is an essential compendium to a music whose spirit and ideas still vibrate through contemporary culture today. Quite a must, now rarely seen.

A gorgeous 10 year collection of monochrome photos taken by Tanaka throughout the 1970s and early 1980s of celebrities who were active in the period. "Although photography is clearly stated as a side interest, the photos taken by Tanaka, who was always close to the glamorous as a hair designer, intimately captures the real faces of the stars, which cannot be taken by a professional cameraman." Beautifully and candidly capturing the cool atmosphere of the period and the stars that illuminated it, back-stage, at the hotel, in the nightclub, in between, Tanaka intimately documents friends, the stars of the Japanese (and American, and European) screen and stage, leading actresses, singers, fashion models, fashion designers, actors, and others, including Kaori Momoi, Karen Graham, Brooke Shields, Masako Natsume, Ayumi Ishida, Inès de La Fressange, Ken Takakura, Juliette Gréco, Helmut Berger, Kiwako Taichi, Catherine Deneuve, Akiko Wada, Jerry Hall, Mitsuhiro Matsuda, Moira Swan, Janice Dickinson, Seiko Matsuda, Princess Diana, Kimiko Kasai, Georges Moustaki, Mizue Takada, Hiromi Go, Ayako Wakao, Mikijirō Hira, Kaori Momoi, Yūsuke Suga, Hiromi Satō, Rumiko Koyanagi, Mao Daich, Mari Yoshimura, Keiko Matsuzaka, Jun Inoue, Beverly Johnson, Kimiko Ikegami, Nana Kinomi, Yoshiko Mita, and so many others. Anyone familiar with that book would know what to expect here. Photographs, paintings and illustrations, alongside Slocombe's study, with artworks throughout by fellow "Bazooka" art collective members, Kiki Picasso, Bernard Vidal, Natsuko, Yoshi Ichimura, Fred Chalmer, Loulou Picasso, plus Didier Eberoni, Kim Tchoun Kwang, Jena-Baptiste Mondino, Natsuko, Yoichi Nagata, Shigenari Onishi, and more. Full of paintings and photography of women in casts and slings, in hospitals and at accident scenes, medical erotica, body manipulation/mutilation, plus many visual historical references to violent fantasy, medical fetishism and bondage in film, illustration, erotic magazines, and other forms of popular culture from Japan and Europe. Nothing like it, and a long out-of-print collector's item.

Very Good copy still in original publisher's plastic dust jacket. Light wear and age.

Rare and iconic book, Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets (1967) is a collaboration between legendary Japanese underground theater and film director Shuji Terayama, graphic designer Tadanori Yokoo and photographer/cinematographer Yasuhiro Yoshioka. As a precursor to Terayama's first audacious feature-length film of the same title, from 1971, this beautiful softcover book is filled with collages, photographs, graphics, drawings and texts (in Japanese), housed in an elaborate dust-jacket (with amazing Beatles homage lipstick collage on verso) typical of the bold and vibrant pop design style of Yokoo, reaffirms Terayama as a multi-talented avant-garde poet, dramatist, writer, film director, editor and photographer, and one of the central figures of the runaway movement in 1960s Japan. In the same year as this book was published, Terayama (in collaboration with Tadanori Yokoo and others) formed the Tenjo Sajiki, a major phenomenon on the Japanese Angura ("underground") theater scene, the prolific group was known for their stage works marked by experimentalism, folklore influences, social provocation, grotesque eroticism and the flamboyant fantasy characteristic of Terayama's oeuvre. An amazing and rare early example of their published collaborative work.

Shūji Terayama (1935 — 1983) was a Japanese avant-garde poet, dramatist, writer, film director, and photographer. His works range from radio drama, experimental television, underground (Angura) theatre, countercultural essays, to Japanese New Wave and "expanded" cinema. Terayama is considered one of the most productive and provocative creative artists to come out of Japan, with a wide-reaching influence on many artists from the 1970s onward.

Very Good copy with Good dust jacket. Light tanning and foxing, with a few small chips to dust jacket edges.

Published by Kodansha, only in Japan, this large, lavish volume is comprised entirely of beautiful full page reproductions of Yokoo's major poster works spanning his entire career to date (1978), in which his iconic photo-montage and print-making had a distinct psychedelic, erotic and esoteric spirit that captured international attention. A true avant-garde of the Japanese scene, this rich volume includes his famous works for the theatre company Tenjō Sajiki (w. director Shuji Terayama), exhibition and concert posters, and much more. Each work is accompanied by text by Koichi Tanigawa, and an introduction by world-renowned illustrator and graphic designer Milton Glaser, who had a close relationship with Yokoo.

Includes original publisher's obi-strip and the rarely preserved fold-out Yokoo poster! A Very Good and most complete copy of this first collectible edition. Highly recommended.

Tadanori Yokoo (横尾 忠則), born in Nishiwaki, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, in 1936, is one of Japan's most successful and internationally recognized graphic designers and artists. He began his career as a stage designer for avant garde theatre in Tokyo. In the late 1960s he became interested in mysticism and psychedelia, deepened by travels in India. Because his work was so attuned to 1960s pop culture, he has often been (unfairly) described as the "Japanese Andy Warhol" or likened to psychedelic poster artist Peter Max, but Yokoo's complex and multi-layered imagery is intensely autobiographical and entirely original, heavily reflecting Japan's cultural history and iconography. By the late 60s he had already achieved international recognition for his work and was included in the 1968 "Word & Image" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Four years later MoMA mounted a solo exhibition of his graphic work organized by Mildred Constantine. Yokoo collaborated extensively with Shūji Terayama and his theater Tenjō Sajiki. He has also starred as a protagonist in Nagisa Oshima's film Diary of a Shinjuku Thief. In 1968 Yukio Mishima claimed, "Tadanori Yokoo's works reveal all of the unbearable things which we Japanese have inside ourselves and they make people angry and frightened. He makes explosions with the frightening resemblance which lies between the vulgarity of billboards advertising variety shows during festivals at the shrine devoted to the war dead and the red containers of Coca Cola in American Pop Art, things which are in us but which we do not want to see."

"Beksinski's powerfully unique paintings are such as I have never before seen" — H.R. Giger

Wonderful, scarce and collectible monograph capturing 30 years of the work of the great Polish painter Zdzisław Beksiński, published by Galerie Morpheus in Las Vegas. First issued in 1998, this lavishly illustrated hardcover monograph reproduces Beksiński's surreal dystopian paintings spanning his entire career, alongside an introduction by James Cowen, texts by Tadeusz Nyczek, and great quotes and reflections throughout by Beksiński himself.

Zdzisław Beksiński (1929 – 2005) was a Polish painter, photographer and sculptor. Beksiński had no formal training as an artist. Born in Sanok, he studied architecture in Kraków and worked as a construction site supervisor before turning to his passion for art, sculpting with construction site materials for his medium. His early photography would be a precursor to his paintings, often referred to as dystopian surrealism. Beksiński claimed, "I wish to paint in such a manner as if I were photographing dreams". Beksiński undertook painting with a passion, working intensely whilst listening to classical music and quickly becoming a leading figure in contemporary Polish art. In the late 1960s, Beksiński entered what he himself called his "fantastic period", which lasted up to the mid-1980s, during which he created his famed images of desolate, surrealistic landscapes with intricate depictions of anxious, abstracted figures and architecture in states of decay, mutation and decomposition. Although Beksiński's art was often dark, he himself was known to be a pleasant person with a keen sense of humour. Modest and somewhat shy, he avoided public events such as the openings of his own exhibitions and almost never visited museums or exhibitions in general. He always credited music as his main source of inspiration. Beksiński avoided concrete analysis of the content of his work, saying "I cannot conceive of a sensible statement on painting". Beksiński was stabbed to death at his Warsaw apartment in February 2005 by a 19-year-old acquaintance from Wołomin, reportedly because he refused to lend the teenager money.

"In the medieval tradition, Beksinski seems to believe art to be a forewarning about the fragility of the flesh – whatever pleasures we know are doomed to perish – thus, his paintings manage to evoke at once the process of decay and the ongoing struggle for life. They hold within them a secret poetry, stained with blood and rust." — Guillermo del Toro, Mexican film director

Marco Fusinato
DESASTRES

2022, English
Softcover, 408 pages, 21 x 28 cm
Published by Lenz Press / Milan

$85.00 - In stock -

This major new catalogue is published to accompany Marco Fusinato's DESASTRES presentation at the Venice Biennale 2022, curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, running from April 23 to November 27, 2022. DESASTRES is an experimental noise project that synchronises sound with image and takes the form of a durational solo performance as installation. The artist will be performing during the opening hours of the Biennale—a total of 200 days. The presentation will be the first time the Australian Pavilion, located in the historic Giardini della Biennale, has been the site for a live durational performance.

Originally from the Veneto region in Italy, Marco Fusinato's parents migrated to Australia where he was born. He currently lives and works in Naarm/Melbourne. Fusinato (b. 1964) is a contemporary artist and noise-musician whose work takes the form of installation, photographic reproduction, design, performance and recording. DESASTRES is a culmination of his interests in noise/experimental music, underground culture, mass media images and art history. He uses an electric guitar as a signal generator into mass amplification to improvise slabs of noise, saturated feedback and discordant intensities that trigger a deluge of images onto a freestanding floor-to-ceiling LED wall. The images are sourced via a stream of words that have been put into an open search across multiple online platforms. There is no theme as such, rather the immersion of sound and image is open for the audience to interpret and make sense of. The intent is to create some kind of hallucination, elation in disorientation and exhaustion from confusion. The work is an invitation for audiences to come together within a high-intensity concentration of energy. What can't be seen, can be felt: sound as physical matter which creates a transformative experience.

This expansive publication features a new essay by Branden W. Joseph, professor of art history at Columbia University and an extensive interview by curator Alexie Glass-Kantor with Marco Fusinato. It also includes texts by critical theorist and filmmaker Elizabeth Povinelli, AI researcher and author Kate Crawford, writer and curator Chus Martínez, and musicians/outre-guitarists Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Stephen O'Malley (SUNN O)))) and Bruce Russell (Dead C).

Marco Fusinato (b. 1964) is an Australian contemporary artist and noise-musician based in Naarm/Melbourne whose work takes the form of installation, photographic reproduction, design, performance and recording.

As an artist, he conceives his work as a succession of interrelated projects, some of which continue across numerous iterations. Within these projects the works are almost always serial and use specific frameworks for experimentation, as if demonstrating a thesis. Working across disciplines and cultural fields, Fusinato explores the tensions and contradictions of opposing forces: underground culture/institutions, noise/silence, minimalism/maximalism, purity/contamination. He creates dynamic situations in which these energies are captured by combining allegorical appropriation with an interest in the intensity of a gesture or event.

Fusinato's work has been presented in many international exhibitions, including All the World's Futures, 56th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (2015); The Imminence of Poetics, 30th Sao Paulo Biennale (2012); SUPERPOSITION: Art of Equilibrium and Engagement, 21st Biennale of Sydney (2018); and Australia: Antipodean Stories, Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea, Milan (2019). His work was also included in Soundings: A Contemporary Score, the first ever exhibition of sound at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2013) and Sonic Youth etc.: Sensational Fix (2008–10), a European travelling exhibition of artists who have collaborated with the New York rock band, Sonic Youth.

Scarce first Japanese edition (entirely in English language), published in Tokyo by Charles Tuttle, of this beautifully produced over-sized 1981 book by H. R. Giger. Foreword by Timothy Leary.

In 1981, a year after being awarded the Oscar for Best Achievement for Visual Effects for Alien, the book H.R. GIGER N.Y. CITY was published. This series of post Alien works, the result of an intense period of non-stop painting, literally day and night, were inspired by Giger's trip to New York City and a template which his colleague Cornelius de Fries, brought back from one of his excursions into the electronic industry. The stencil was actually a sheet of scrap metal from which electrical components had been punched out. Alongside these incredible works are drawings, articles, press clippings, posters and polaroids from Giger's time in New York City.

Fantastic Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor and set designer Hans Rudolf "Ruedi" Giger was born in 1940, the son of a chemist. He spoke of a father who viewed art as a "breadless profession", and strongly encouraged his son to enter into pharmaceutics. Despite this, in 1962, he moved to Zürich, where he studied Architecture and industrial design at the School of Applied Arts until 1970. Giger's style and thematic execution have been hugely influential. His design for the Alien was inspired by his painting Necronom IV and earned him an Oscar in 1980. His books of paintings, particularly Necronomicon and Necronomicon II (1985) and the frequent appearance of his art in Omni magazine continued his rise to international prominence. Giger is also well known for artwork on several music recording albums. His most distinctive stylistic innovation is that of a representation of human bodies and machines in a cold, interconnected relationship, he described as "biomechanical". His paintings often display fetishistic sexual imagery. His main influences were painters Ernst Fuchs and Salvador Dalí. He was also a personal friend of Timothy Leary. Giger suffered from night terrors and his paintings are all to some extent inspired by his experiences with that particular sleep disorder, making his first paintings as a means of art therapy. In 1998 Giger acquired the Château St. Germain in Gruyères, Switzerland, and it now houses the H. R. Giger Museum, a permanent repository of his work.

Good copy, tight binding with some corner cover wear, tanning to page edges and foxing to preliminary pages.
